A preliminary hearing has been set for Aug. 29 for a Vian man who allegedly robbed a Muldrow convenience store in April.

Lucas James Blackbird, 20, was arrested following a robbery at Pat's Food Store in Muldrow. He is facing a charge of robbery with a dangerous weapon. When Blackbird allegedly committed the robbery, he was free on a $25,000 bond while awaiting trial on five rape counts, according to court records.

Police said Blackbird allegedly entered the convenience store at about 9 p.m., waving a long knife and ordering the store clerk to turn over about $70 in cash, along with cigarettes.

Police said Blackbird cut the store's telephone line before fleeing the scene. He was arrested about an hour and a half after the incident when Sequoyah County Sheriff's deputies spotted him near a Muldrow motel. Blackbird was originally detained for public intoxication, but he was later identified as the robbery suspect.

According to court records, Blackbird is also charged with five counts of rape in connection with alleged sexual encounters with a girl under the age of 15 early last year.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
