POTEAU - The Class 4A regional baseball tournament didn't go anything like the Sallisaw Black Diamonds wanted.

Sallisaw, which was supposed to host the tournament, instead traveled to Poteau on Friday after heavy rains left its own field swamped. The Diamonds then suffered a 7-0 loss to Collinsville in the first round before getting eliminated by Poteau 11-1 in the late game.

Poteau bounced back from a 4-3 loss to Broken Bow in the first round as Brice Wilson homered and Brock Vise drove in three runs against Sallisaw.

The Pirates got four of their runs in the bottom of the second inning, including two on a double by Vise. Wilson made it 10-1 in the fifth inning with a three-run home run before Vise added an RBI double to close the scoring.

Starting pitcher Garrett Groom got the win for Poteau, which held the Diamonds to a lone base hit by Jake Seay.

Sallisaw, which was coming off a district championship win at Hilldale on the previous Monday, closed its season with a record of 16-14.

Poteau improved to 23-6 with the win and then came back on Saturday and beat Collinsville and Broken Bow to set up a Sunday final against Broken Bow. The Pirates won that game 4-1 to advance to the Class 4A state tournament for the first time in school history.

Collinsville 7, Sallisaw 0

David Chester cracked a pair of two-run homers on Friday afternoon to lift No. 5-ranked Collinsville past the Diamonds in their first-round game at the regional tourney.

Chester, batting in the clean-up spot for the Cardinals, hit his first round-tripper to right-center field in the top of the first inning. He added another two-run shot in the fifth inning to stretch the Collinsville lead to 5-0.

Ryan Coe had another home run for Collinsville with a solo shot in the sixth inning as the Cardinals pulled away from Sallisaw.

The Diamonds had several opportunities to get on the scoreboard, but left runners stranded on third base four times.

Senior first baseman Valentin Ramos led Sallisaw at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort and a double. Jacob Martinez and Daniel Jacobs hits singles for the Diamonds' other two base hits.

Javier Olazagasti took the loss for Sallisaw after allowing seven hits while going the full seven innings. He struck out nine batters, but hit five with pitches.
