District 1 Commissioner Bruce Tabor confirmed that County Clerk Vicki Sawney was able to find sufficient funds in county accounts to pay the insurance. The amount was about $170,000, Tabor said.
Sheriff Ron Lockhart confirmed that he had paid the insurance for employees at the Sequoyah County Jail.
Two weeks ago the commissioners announced the county may not have enough money to pay for the insurance, and Tabor put the insurance payments on the meeting agenda to be considered for cancellation. If the insurance was cancelled, Tabor said, the county would probably have to become self insured. Sawney told the commissioners they had enough money to make the semi-annual payment but the county may have to transfer some money around to cover the payments at the end of the fiscal year, on June 30.
Keathley certified
Chris Keathley, Sequoyah County Emergency Management director, was awarded the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Advanced Professional Development Series Certificate, which was presented by Tabor to Keathley at the meeting.
Tabor read a letter from the State Department of Emergency Management noting that Keathley has completed a comprehensive training program in disaster operations leading to special recognition by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and FEMA.
Other business
Upon the approval of Vian Fire Chief Ed Barton the commissioners approved the purchase of a $159,900 pumper truck for Vian.
The commissioners also approved a request from the Sequoyah County Water Association to place water lines in county rights-of-way when necessary.
