At their Monday meeting, Sequoyah County Commissioners renewed various juvenile services' contracts and agreements.

The commissioners approved an amended contract with Sac and Fox Nation Juvenile Affairs to reflect recent raises mandated by new legislation. The board also renewed detention service agreements with Oklahoma Juvenile Services and a Vinita-based youth services agency.

The board did a close-out for a Rural Economic Action Plan (REAP) grant for the 9-1-1 427- telephone exchange. The commissioners confirmed that the Eastern Sequoyah County 9-1-1 had already received its part of the grant.

The commissioners approved a resolution for the county road machinery and equipment revolving fund. District 3 Commissioner Cleon Harrell said the resolution is approved yearly and shows items that are currently under lease. The board approved a deferral agreement with Armstrong Bank for a piece of equipment in District 2 Commissioner Steve Carter's district. The lease agreement is on a dump truck bought before Carter came into office.

Other Business

Yvonne Nance asked the commission if they could help with the cost of catering the lunch for the Sequoyah, Adair, and Cherokee Counties (SACC) empowerment zone meeting set Wednesday in Sallisaw. While it was decided that the county didn't have the money in their budget to help with the lunch, they allowed several county workers to help set up for the event.

Nance said the group was formed to apply for a special community grant, but that grant was never funded. The group stayed together and helps local agencies when they apply for various grants. Nance said if a local fire department or police department puts a SACC letter of recommendation in with their application, it puts them up a step on the ladder in the grant application process.

She said the meeting is a time to provide information about the group to the public.

In other business, a representative with Wingfield Engineering asked the board to consider using the company in the future. The company inspects bridges, designs bridges and roads, and handles acquisitions of rights of way. The representative showed the commissioners an example of some of the work the company does, and told the commissioners they can visit the company at the Association of County Commissioners meeting in Oklahoma City.

After an executive session, the commissioners also appointed Donna Graham to the county assessor's position. Please related story on page A-1.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
