A 19-year-old man and his stepmother, residents of the Short community northeast of Muldrow, were arrested Friday evening for the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl.

Joshua Jones, 19, and Donna Jones, 36, were each charged Friday in Sequoyah County District Court in Sallisaw with one count of first-degree rape and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Sequoyah County Sheriff's investigators reported that the arrests were made as a result of an investigation conducted by the sheriff's office. Sheriff's investigators reported that they obtained arrest warrants Friday for Joshua Jones for committing the alleged rape and for Jones' stepmother, Donna Jones, for her assistance in the alleged rape, which allegedly occurred on May 5.

Sheriff's investigators reported that while serving the warrants at the home of Donna Jones, they also found miscellaneous items of evidence relating to the rape investigation. Investigators also found substances appearing to be marijuana and alleged drug paraphernalia.

They were each booked into the Sequoyah County Jail in Sallisaw on various charges and as of Monday were being held without bond.

According to court records, the victim was staying the night with a schoolmate from her special education class when the incident occurred. The girl told police that no one was at the home when she first arrived at her schoolmate's house, but later eight people came home. The victim and her friend were in a bedroom when Donna Jones, Joshua Jones and an adult male entered the room.

Donna Jones allegedly wanted the victim to have sex. When the victim refused, Donna Jones allegedly held the girl's arms and hands against a mattress on the floor. While Joshua Jones allegedly raped the girl, Donna Jones brandished a knife and threatened her, saying she would kill the girl and her parents if she told anyone about the incident.

Others at the home were allegedly drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana and tried to talk the victim into partaking, but the victim said she refused.

The victim told police that she tried to use a cell phone her father had loaned to her to call her parents, but the phone did not have a signal and wouldn't work. She also tried to use Donna Jones' phone, but Donna Jones would not let her. The next day, Donna and her husband took the victim home and Donna Jones again told the victim that if she told anyone she would kill the victim and her parents.

The girl didn't tell her parents until the night of May 9 after her parents could tell something was wrong and made her tell them what was troubling her. The girl and her parents reported the incident the next morning and took the girl to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital in Sallisaw to be examined.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher.
