A Sallisaw man's jaw was allegedly broken after a verbal argument allegedly escalated into a physical assault.

According to court records, Terry Joe Richey of Vian, 22, was charged June 14 with aggravated assault and battery from the alleged assault, which occurred on June 3.

Sallisaw Police Officer Wayne Rowell reported that at about 4:13 p.m. June 3 he was dispatched to a Sallisaw home in reference to an assault. Rowell reportedly spoke to the alleged victim, who told police that he and a friend took Jeremy Small and Richey home at about midnight on June 2 when the alleged victim and Small got into a verbal argument.

During the argument, Richey allegedly came up and punched the victim in the jaw and then picked him up by the hair and a leg and threw him into a vehicle. The alleged victim was later taken Sequoyah Memorial Hospital in Sallisaw, with a broken jaw.

A witness reportedly corroborated the alleged victim's story.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
