Firefighters from Rural Fire Protection District No. 1 at Gore responded to a fire believed caused by lightning Sunday, Fire Chief Dana Tracy reported.

Tracy said two witnesses saw lightning strike a large pile of trash at about 2:15 p.m. Sunday. The fire was on Golden Pond Road, about one-half mile off Moonshine Road, near a residence rented by Rose Carter, Tracy reported.

The fire chief said flames were about five feet high when firemen arrived, and the fire caused a large plume of smoke, possibly from tires in the trash pile.

"We had two explosions, probably from old butane tanks from gas barbecues," Tracy said.

Tracy said the fire also ignited a power pole and caused a grass fire, which came to within a foot of two mobile homes.

"We were able to save both homes," Tracy said.

He reported the fire district sent three pumpers, one grass rig and 13 firemen to the fire, and firemen were on the scene for about two hours.

The firemen were assisted by Webbers Falls and Gore firemen and one fire truck from Webbers Falls and two trucks from Gore.

Tracy said, "The fire could have been bad if it had gotten out of hand."

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
