A Muldrow man filed a civil lawsuit Tuesday against the parents of his ex-wife, who remains in jail on a contempt charge for refusing to reveal the location of the couple's daughter.

Tregg VanZandt named Ron and Robin Ruth as defendants in the suit and accuses them of aiding his ex-wife, Misty VanZandt, in removing his daughter from the county with the intent to deny his visitation rights.

Misty VanZandt fled the state with her daughter after a divorce two years ago, allegedly violating the visitation rights of her ex-husband. According to court records, Misty VanZandt alleged that her daughter had been sexually abused during visits with her ex-husband.

In the civil suit, Tregg VanZandt alleges that the Ruths' actions have caused him to suffer damages for "loss of society and companionship with his daughter."

The lawsuit also claims that Robin Ruth has slandered Tregg VanZandt on one or more occasions "by publishing to third parties that plaintiff is a child molester or child abuser or has sexually abused his daughter." He is asking for actual and punitive damages in excess of $10,000.

VanZandt has been held in the Sequoyah County Jail in Sallisaw since November after being apprehended in Texas in late October. The whereabouts of her 7-year-old daughter remain unknown.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
