Pre-setting hearings will be held in the upcoming weeks in Sequoyah County District Court for two area residents facing various felony charges.

According to the district attorney's office, a pre-setting hearing is a time for a defendant to accept the state's plea offer and then a date is set for the defendant to plead, or the defendant can decline the state's offer and the date for the defendant's preliminary hearing is then set.

A Gore woman, who was a former employee of a Gore insurance agency, is facing four counts of embezzlement and six counts of violating the Oklahoma Computer Crimes Act after an investigation was conducted by the Oklahoma Insurance Department's anti-fraud unit. Sands is a former employee of Southlake Insurance agency of Gore. Her pre-setting hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. Aug. 31.

Sands, 27, was charged last month in Sequoyah County District Court. She was released from the Sequoyah County jail in Sallisaw on a $15,000 bond.

Court records indicate that when Sands received cash or checks from customers, she allegedly converted them to her own use, disposing of the office copy of the receipt and leaving several customers without insurance coverage.

According to the state's complaint, Sands obtained more than $6,000 from her alleged scheme. Since the discovery, the Oklahoma Insurance Department has suspended Sand's license to conduct insurance business in Oklahoma.

Three of the computer crimes allegations involve incidents where Sands allegedly pocketed the premium payments and then electronically submitted payments to the insurance company by debiting the Southlake account, causing a loss to the agency.

The remaining computer crimes allegedly involve three incidents in which Sands is accused of electronically securing insurance for herself or her husband, and debiting the premium payments from the Southlake account.

Molestation Case

Elbert Ray Green of Roland is scheduled to be in court at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 14. He is facing three felony counts of lewd molestation and two counts of sodomy after a 10-year-old girl reported to police that she has been molested.

Green, 59, is accused of two counts of lewd molestation which occurred between May and August 2001, two counts of sodomy which occurred between September and October 2001, and a third count of lewd molestation which occurred between March and May 2003.

The girl told police that Green began molesting her between May and August 2001, before she began her first-grade year. She said Green had sexual contact with her about 20 times during a two-year period until she told him to stop.

During an interview with police, Green allegedly admitted to about 15 sexual incidents with the child, including sodomy. Green denied penetrating the girl. He allegedly told police that the girl asked him to teach her about sex.

Green is currently free on bond.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
