Smith received 7,974 votes, or 59 percent of the vote, beating challenger Stacy Leeds, who received 5,593 votes, or 41 percent.
The race for deputy chief saw incumbent Joe Grayson Jr. defeating Raymond Vann. Grayson received 8,230 votes, 61 percent of the total votes cast. Vann finished with 5,205 votes, or 39 percent.
The following results for Council seats were decided at the polls on June 23:
-District Three - Sequoyah District (Sequoyah County - two seats)
In the race for Seat 1, incumbent David W. Thornton with 624 votes narrowly defeated Sam Ed Bush Jr. who received 615 votes. The tally includes absentee votes reported on the Cherokee Nation Web site.
Neither Thornton or Bush were available for comment Tuesday. The Cherokee Nation Election Services said that if Bush wanted a vote recount, he would have to submitted the request by 5 p.m. Wednesday, and the cost would be $750 per district, for a total fee of $1,500. That would be $750 for the District 3 vote recount and another $750 for the absentee ballot recount.
For Seat 2, challenger Janelle Lattimore Fullbright defeated incumbent Phyllis Yargee by a vote of 729 (58 percent) to 535 (42 percent).
Fullbright said, "I was really honored to be elected, and I have many plans for Sequoyah County.
"I plan to serve on the Health Care Committee."
Fullbright said she hopes to initiate a plan to have Cherokee citizens go to Fort Smith, Ark., hospitals for tests and other medical procedures. Now the patients are referred to Tulsa hospitals.
"The Fort Smith hospitals would be much more convenient," Fullbright said.
She said she also hopes to have a dialysis center established in Sequoyah County. Now, patients must go to Poteau, Stilwell or Fort Smith.
Yargee said she hopes for the best for the future of the Cherokee people.
Yargee said, "I was honored to serve. I learned a lot and I am humbly grateful for those four years."
Yargee said she was proud of two initiatives that came out of Sequoyah County - funding for rural fire departments throughout the tribe's 14-county area and the $1,000 scholarships awarded to graduating high school students who were named valedictorians or salutatorians throughout the 14-county area.
Also, Yargee said the tribe was able to offer improvements to rural water systems, specifically in the west end of the county. "We were going to try to get some rural water systems up to speed," Yargee said, "that's how you help attract business growth."
Yargee said she hoped the new tribal council will look after the needs of the tribe's citizens. "Those in Sequoyah County have different needs than those in other counties. We need someone to look after those people because everyone needs help some times.
"I wish the best for the new council and I pray they'll have the care of the Cherokee people at heart," Yargee said.
The new and re-elected council members will take office on Aug. 14 during inauguration ceremonies held at the Old Cherokee Courthouse in downtown Tahlequah, Fullbright said.
"Up until then, people can still call me and I will for them what I can," Yargee said.
