A Christian event called "Rock the River" is being held Sept. 10 at the Riverfront Park in Fort Smith, Ark., to raise money for Hannah House in Fort Smith.

Hannah House, an interdenominational Christian home, is a residential facility for pregnant and troubled teens and young women, Charity Benefield, event coordinator, said.

Hannah House opened Sept. 8, 1997, and funding for Hannah House comes from individuals, corporations, churches, and civic groups.

"Our purpose is to offer these young women a place of refuge in a warm, home-like atmosphere where we can help them work on the issues in their lives that brought them to Hannah House," according to Hannah House's Web site. "We want to help them heal and become productive, caring individuals who are able to care for their babies, or to help them in making a decision to place their baby for adoption."

Benefield said the Rock the River event will be filled with fun, food, and festivities, as well as musical entertainment showcasing both area talent and professional artists.

The day will kick off at 10 a.m. with the activities opening, followed by a Christian Battle of the Bands at 11 a.m., featuring local Christian artists.

"As our rockers take the stage, others will take their seats as they rock to raise money for Hannah House in our Rock-A-Thon," Benefield said.

Masters of cermony for the day will include KISR 93's Mike at Night, KFSM Channel Five's Chief Meteorologist Garrett Lewis, and Cord of Three's Bryan Morse.

Fort Smith Mayor Ray Baker will take the stage at 4:30 p.m. to begin a Tribute to 9-11 with Arkansas gubernatorial candidate and former assistant secretary of Homeland Security, Asa Hutchinson, and World Trade Center survivor, Dale Brunk, originally of Roland.

The evening will close with a concert from Nashville recording artists, Cord of Three, and national recording artists, Sanctus Real.

Tickets are $10 for adults in advance or $12 at the gate, $5 for children who are three to eight years old, and tickets are free for children who are two and under. For more information or to ask about advance group rates, call (479) 782-5683.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
