A Vian man was charged Friday with various crimes after a woman told police that he assaulted her and threatened her life with a gun.

Shane E. Benge, 28, of Vian was charged Friday with felony assault with a dangerous weapon, misdemeanor domestic abuse assault and battery, and felony kidnapping, according to court records.

Roland Police Officer John Hancock reported that at about 9 a.m. June 15 he was called to the Roland Police Department to meet with a woman about an alleged domestic assault. Hancock spoke to the woman, who had several marks on her face and around her neck, as well as a bruise on the back of her left arm, Hancock reported.

The woman told police that her former boyfriend, Benge, had assaulted her and kicked her several times, and then choked her leaving marks on her neck. She explained that she had come home around 4 a.m. June 15. She had been out with a male friend. When she and her friend walked in the house, Benge walked out of the master bedroom pointing a pistol at her and her friend.

Benge allegedly told the male to get out, which he did. The woman told police that she began trying to talk to Benge, but he kept yelling at her and told her he was going to kill her. She alleged that she tried to call police, but he took her phone and threw it across the room. When she tried to leave, Benge allegedly grabbed her and began choking her. She alleged that Benge also hit and kicked her with his hands and feet. At one point, Benge allegedly turned the gun on himself and threatened to kill himself, but quickly turned the gun back on the woman and refused to leave, the woman told police.

When asked how Benge got in the house, the woman said he had a key because they had lived together for about three years. She said he had not lived there with her for the past six months.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
