The Muldrow Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8384 will provide the Color Honor Guard for the Oct. 2 Old Settler's Day activities at the Muldrow City Park, Marvin Brant, Old Settlers' Day chairperson, said.

The honor guard will provide the military honors for the flag raising at the start of the day's activities. Old Settlers' Day, sponsored by the Muldrow Lion's Club, will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Brant said the Muldrow VFW Post 8384 Color Honor Guard is comprised of wartime veterans and provides military honors at funerals of veterans and public events in the eastern Sequoyah County area.

VFW members taking part in the Old Settler's Day activities include Bill Dowdy, post commander; Terry Chamberlain, VFW District 2 commander; Danny McGuire, post quartermaster; Roger Phelan, post and district service officer; Joe Calvillo, post senior vice commander; and Joe Lee, post chaplain. Others participating in the event include Chuck Roberds, Frank Butler, Harvey Matthews, Lenord Snider, Coy Thompson, Gary Chandler, Don Davis, and John Acton.

The Muldrow VFW and ladies auxiliary will also have a booth where buddy poppies and patriotic ribbons will be sold. Profits from the sale of the poppies and ribbons will be used to support needy veterans and troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, Brant said.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
