A Sallisaw man faces two felonies in connection with the June 24 assault of a disabled neighbor.

Shayne Todd Rogers, 34, was charged Monday in Sequoyah County District Court in Sallisaw with felony first-degree burglary, felony aggravated assault and battery, and a misdemeanor resisting an officer count.

According to court records, the assault occurred on June 24 at a Sallisaw apartment complex. A witness said that he and his girlfriend, who lived next door to the victim, heard yelling from the victim's apartment. The witness said he went next door to find Rogers on top of his 56-year-old disabled neighbor, assaulting him. The witness said he walked in the apartment and yelled at Rogers to stop, but Rogers allegedly continued hitting the victim. The witness said he hit Rogers in the face to get him off of the man.

Rogers then staggered to the door and left.

The victim told police that he was sitting in his recliner when Rogers walked into his home without being invited or without knocking and came over to where he was sitting. The victim reported that Rogers never said anything to him and just began beating him in the head.

Police arrested Rogers, who resisted arrest, outside the apartment complex. Police suspected Rogers was intoxicated at the time of the alleged assault.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
