At a Tuesday night meeting, the Gore City Council accepted the resignation of the town's fire chief and hired a new police officer.

The council accepted a letter of resignation from fire chief Chris Keathley. Clay Cunningham will take Keathley's place. Keathley will remain the Sequoyah County Emergency Management director.

In other business, the council hired Vernon Lafoon as a Gore police officer and voted to give another officer, Coletta Peyton, a $1 per hour raise.

The council took no action on two agenda items, including to chip and seal Clear Creek Road and to purchase a truck for the town's fire department.

The council approved a new lease agreement for the nutrition program for the senior citizen's center, discussed various public nuisance property violations, and approved a resolution to establish a National Incident Management System (NIMS).

Mayor Michael Kinnear explained that NIMS is from Homeland Security and is system for the town, police, fire, and other agencies to follow during any type of natural disaster or emergency. He said NIMS is a consistent approach for everyone to work better together.
