The commissioners approved a $25,000 grant application to the Eastern Oklahoma Development District in Muskogee for the Sequoyah County Historical Society. This grant, if approved, will be for the Sequoyah County Historical Society to refurbish the society's museum at 200 E. Creek in Sallisaw. District 1 Commissioner Bruce Tabor and District 3 Commissioner Cleon Harrell said the estimated cost for the remodeling is $53,000 and includes a new roof. If the society receives the grant, the members must raise the remainder of the money themselves.
Harrell and Tabor also approved three applications for Rural Economic Action Plan grants. The applications are for $20,000 in Tabor's district to be used to chip and seal about two miles of county road south of Muldrow; for $20,000 in Harrell's district to join North Redland Road to Blackjack Road; and a $22,000 grant for District 2 Commissioner Steve Carter. Carter was not at the commissioners' meeting. He was attending a meeting of the Sequoyah County Excise Board, which began a half-hour before the commissioners' meeting.
Tabor said after the commission meeting that the commissioners had to meet Monday to approve the grant applications, which are due this week, and were unable to attend the excise board meeting.
The commissioners also approved a memorandum agreement with the Cherokee Nation. The agreement is for the use of Cherokee fuel tax to fix county roads in all three county districts, Harrell and Tabor explained.
A $500 appropriations transfer was also approved by Harrell and Tabor for the election board. The money was transferred from the county's maintenance and operations account to pay for travel. The transfer was approved contingent upon the money being available.
