Gore area residents age 16 (with guardian permission) and up now have the opportunity to celebrate life by joining in the blood drive from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Monday at Harps Grocery Store on the blood mobile.

Melody Smith, donor recruiter with United Blood Services in fort Smith, Ark., said, "Every successful blood donor will be entered into a drawing for a 2008 Nissan Versa to be given away at the end of summer.

"It is important to come together as a community to help one another," Smith said. "We all expect blood to be there for us if we ever need it. But only about 5 percent of area residents donate blood."

Those who donate will also receive a free T-shirt, Smith said.

"Not only will people have a great feeling after donating blood at the drive, but they'll be able to check their total cholesterol level. United Blood Services offers free cholesterol testing when people give blood," Smith added.

United Blood Services does a total cholesterol test that allows donors to eat before the test-no fasting required.

"We use the total cholesterol test because it's important for donors to have a healthy meal before they donate," Smith said.

It is recommended that adults have a different cholesterol test, called a lipoprotein profile, every five years. A lipoprotein profile requires a 12-hour fast and is done at a physician's office or lab.

Donors can check their confidential results at www.UnitedBloodServices.org the week after their donation.

Blood donors must be 16 years or older and in good health, Smith said. Donors who are 16 must have a Minor Donor Permit signed by a legal guardian. People who have given at least three times-with one of those donations in the past six months-are eligible for a streamlined health interview with fewer questions before their donation.

Donors are asked to bring a photo ID and Donor Card every time they donate. First-time donors receive a Donor Card with their blood type in the mail shortly after their first donation. People who wish to donate at the blood drive may schedule an appointment by calling Bonnie Summerlin at (918) 489-2202 or logging on to www.UnitedBloodServices.org.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
