The Sequoyah County Sheriff's Department is now online with a new Web site.

Various information, including information about registered sex and violent offenders living in the county under the sheriff's jurisdiction, can be found on the department's Web site at www.sequoyahcountysheriff.org.

Sheriff Johnny Philpot said the purpose of creating the site is to keep the public better informed.

Philpot said the public will also be able to meet sheriff's department employees, and get information about sheriff's sales, the civil process, and the concealed weapon license process.

The department's contact telephone and facsimile numbers, along with the department's business hours, are also on the Web site. He said residents can e-mail the department at sheriff@csweb.net.

Philpot said the site is still in its infancy, but they will be adding more information on additional services the department offers, such as fingerprinting and photographing for passports and various types of licenses.

"I think it is important to listen to the public and find out what they want and expect from the Web site," Philpot said.

Philpot said the department paid for and developed the site with grant money.

"I'm proud I can say this is something we can give to the taxpayers," Philpot said. "No budget money was used for this project. That is a great feeling."

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
