Sallisaw Mayor Shannon Vann recently presented a proclamation to Help-In-Crisis of Sallisaw declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Sallisaw.

Help-In-Crisis provides help and information on domestic abuse for victims and their families, Donna Hines, volunteer coordinator, said.

Hines said that domestic violence is the physical, psychological, or emotional abuse of a child or an adult by another with whom they are acquainted or related.

Abuse is not confined to certain groups of society or economic status, rich or poor, young or old, Asian or North American, male or female, Hines said.

Abuse affects people from all walks of life, she said.

"Domestic violence happens because an individual chooses to use violence to resolve conflict or to control other members of their family. It is estimated that one in three women will be abused at some point in their lives," Hines said.

Acts of domestic violence generally fall into one or more categories: physical battering, physical attacks or aggressive behavior, ranging from bruising to murder; sexual abuse; and psychological battering, constant verbal abuse, harassment, excessive possessiveness, isolating the victim from friends and family, deprivation of physical and economical resources, and destruction of personal property, Hines said.

For more information on domestic abuse contact Help-In-Crisis at 203 N. Elm in Sallisaw or call 775-3300 or the Sallisaw Police Department at 101 W. Chickasaw or call 775-4182.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
