All the local high school football teams scrimmaged for the first time last week and are getting ready for their second and final scrimmages of the preseason later this week.

SALLISAW

The Black Diamonds took part in a four-team scrimmage at the Indian Bowl in Muskogee on Friday night and head coach Virgil Terry liked what he saw as the night wore on.

"We looked pretty average and then we looked pretty dang good," said Terry. "We did better as it went along. We were a little tentative on defense at the start, but ended up playing pretty good on both sides of the ball."

Sallisaw took on a pair of Class 6A squads in 30-minute live-action scrimmages. The Diamonds faced Tahlequah first and lost 14-7 despite a touchdown run from senior tailback Kyle Stewart.

After that, Sallisaw went up against third-ranked Muskogee and was outscored 7-0.

Despite the losses, Terry saw some bright spots and was especially pleased with the offensive line.

"I'm so tickled with the line," said Terry. "Not that I'm satisfied, but they are ahead of where we thought they would be at this time."

The Diamonds will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Wagoner to scrimmage against the Class 4A top-ranked Bulldogs.

Freshmen will begin at 6 p.m. and the varsity squads will play a half beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Sallisaw opens its season on Aug. 31 at Glenpool.

MULDROW

A week after hosting Stilwell and NOAH in their first scrimmage, the Bulldogs will go on the road this week for their final tune-up before the 2007 season.

Muldrow will scrimmage at Morris on Thursday. The Bulldogs' season opener is Aug. 31 at home against Heavener.

ROLAND

The Rangers took on Poteau in their first scrimmage last Friday evening in Roland, scoring on a pair of long touchdown runs against the Class 4A Pirates.

This week, the Rangers will host Sequoyah-Tahlequah in a scrimmage set to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Roland's first game of the season is Aug. 31 at Stilwell.

VIAN

The defending Class 2A state runners-up went to Tulsa last week to scrimmage Lincoln Christian and scored three touchdowns while giving up two against the Bulldogs.

Junior quarterback Tyren Samuels threw touchdown passes to Andy McEver and Cheyenne Nichols, while tailback Miguel Pratt ran for the other Vian touchdown.

"We did all right," said Vian head coach Brandon Tyler. "We still have a lot of work to do, but we saw some good things and a few bad things."

Next up for the Wolverines is a Thursday night scrimmage at home against Panama. The two teams will begin at 6:30 p.m. and admission to the scrimmage is soap and towels for the team.

Vian's season-opener is set for Aug. 31 at home against Seeworth Academy.

GORE

The Pirates will be on the road again this week as they travel to Colcord for their final preseason scrimmage. It is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Gore will kick off its season on Aug. 31 with a non-district game at Keys.

CENTRAL

The Class A Tigers will be taking on Class 3A Kellyville on Friday evening when they hit the road to scrimmage the Ponies.

Central will be the first county team to kick off its regular season. Hulbert will visit Tiger Field on Thursday, Aug. 30.

The Grizzlies hosted Midway and Oaks last week and are scheduled to go to Midway this week for a Friday night scrimmage. Weleetka is also expected to attend the scrimmage.

Gans is preparing for its season on Aug. 31 at defending District C-4 champion Arkoma.

WEBBERS FALLS

The Warriors had their first scrimmage under new head coach Jeff Jones, scoring twice and allowing three touchdowns while facing Arkoma, Haileyville and Bokoshe Friday night at Arkoma.

Webbers Falls ran 35 plays offensively and had 180 yards. The defense gave up 157 in 42 plays.

Quarterback J.D. Alexander completed 2-of-5 passes for 49 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown pass to Clifton Gilbert.
