A Sallisaw man was charged Aug. 14 with the rape and molestation of a 6-year-old girl.

Gary Lee Hale, 53, could face not less than five years in prison for the rape count and not less than three years in prison for the molestation, if he is convicted.

According to court records, the girl described to her mother what Hale allegedly did to her. The girl's mother took her to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital in Sallisaw, where she was interviewed by police. The girl told police that Hale told her not to tell anyone about the incidents.

During an Aug. 5 medical examination in Tulsa, a nurse reported that there was apparent molestation that had caused injury to the child.

Hale was placed under arrest on Aug. 6 and booked into the city jail. When Hale was told about the allegations of sexual abuse, Hale denied it. Hale allegedly told police that he "would not do that to a baby" and that he "did not do this."

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
