Sequoyah County District Attorney Richard L. Gray recently announced that Bobby Owens, 24, will now be confined to the Department of Corrections for 10 years and will be required to participate in drug treatment.
"Upon successful completion of that program, Owens may be considered for probation," Gray said.
Drug court is a way for non-violent drug and alcohol offenders to seek rehabilitation while avoiding jail time. To be in the program, offenders must agree to plead guilty to the charges against them, and if the offender violates requirements of the program they can be automatically sentenced.
"The Sequoyah County Drug Program is extremely advantageous for those who participate," Gray said. "Special District Judge Dennis Sprouse has done an impeccable job with his probationers. Numerous individuals have been given a second chance and the opportunity to be successful citizens through his careful and compassionate stewardship of drug court.
"Occasionally, there are those who ignore good advice, and reject guidance from those who attempt to save them from themselves. In those situations, my office will get their attention by revoking their probation and placing them in prison."
