A Muldrow man was arrested Thursday for leaving the scene of a personal injury accident after he allegedly ran over his estranged wife during a domestic squabble.

The Muldrow Police Department first received the call at 11 a.m. that someone had been run over by a vehicle at Gardenwalk Apartments, Muldrow Police Chief Tony Lewis said.

An investigation revealed the incident occurred after Michael Phelan, 34, and his estranged wife, Barbara Phelan, both of Muldrow, got into a domestic dispute. When the man was attempting to leave the home, the woman allegedly broke out the windows of his vehicle. The man then struck his wife with the left front portion of his vehicle, knocking her down.

Lewis said there is a question of whether Michael Phelan intentionally ran over her, or if she positioned herself in front of the vehicle and he inadvertently ran over her. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.

Barbara Phelan complained of arm and stomach pain when police arrived and she was transported to St. Edward Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith, Ark., where she was treated and released.

Michael Phelan was arrested two hours later after turning himself in to authorities, and he was booked into the city jail on a charge of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, which is a felony. He was later released on a $2,000 bond.
