Jake Knapp ran for three touchdowns to power Class B third-ranked Gans to a comeback win over the Hornets in a crucial match-up in District B-4.
The triumph clinched second place in the league for Gans, setting up a first-round home playoff game on Friday against Watts. The Grizzlies had to weather Cave Springs' aerial bombardment to earn the homefield advantage.
Hornet quarterback Jobey Still passed for 330 yards and three touchdowns, including two strikes in the first quarter as Cave Springs jumped out to a 14-0 edge.
Gans battled back behind its powerful ground game with Knapp leading the way. The junior running back was the game's leading rusher with 113 yards on 11 carries and he scored twice in the second quarter to get Gans back in the contest.
Nick Woodruff rushed for another 97 yards and Heath Branham picked up 91 as the Grizzlies totaled 303 yards on 55 attempts.
Woodruff finished off Gans' opening drive of the third quarter with a one-yard quarterback sneak. Knapp ran for the two-point conversion to give the Grizzlies a 24-14 lead.
Knapp extended the lead with a three-yard TD run and two-point conversion early in the fourth quarter to make it 32-14.
Cave Springs fought back when Still threw his third TD pass of the night, a 33-yarder to Jordan Turner with 5:13 left in the game.
Gans recovered the subsequent onside kick and Woodruff sealed the win with a 48-yard touchdown run at the 3:27 mark.
Despite Still's late three-yard TD run, the Hornets slipped to 6-4 overall and 5-3 in District B-4. The loss dropped Cave Springs into fourth place and sets up a first-round playoff game at District B-3 champion Foyil.
Still completed 13 of his 26 attempts and his 330 passing yards broke his own school record. Turner and Seth Merrie the favorite targets. Merrie had eight receptions for 156 yards while Turner caught three balls for 149 yards.
The Hornets' rushing game was held in check by Gans and leading rusher Eddie Rabbitt finished with 19 yards on seven carries. Including quarterback sacks, The Grizzly defense held Cave Springs to a minus-35 yards rushing.
However, it was the Hornet defense that was dominant in the early stages of the game, forcing Gans to punt on each of its opening three possessions.
On the Hornets' first offensive play of the night, Turner got behind the Grizzly secondary and went 78 yards with a pass from Still. Merrie caught another pass from Still on the two-point conversion and Cave Springs led 8-0 with 7:20 left in the first quarter.
The visitors put together a seven-play, 78-yard drive for the next score. Still completed passes of 28 and 18 yards to Merrie before tossing a 25-yard TD pass to Rabbitt. The conversion run failed, but the Hornets were up 14-0 at the 2:24 mark of the opening period.
The Grizzlies got their first spark of the night when defensive back Branham picked off a pass near midfield and returned it to the Cave Springs 44. Four plays later, Jake Knapp smashed his way up the middle for a 17-yard touchdown run. Nick Woodruff passed to Eual Knapp on the conversion to pull Gans back to within 14-8 midway through the second quarter.
Jake Knapp scored his second TD of the night from six yards out with 33 seconds left in the half, capping a five-play, 78-yard drive for the Grizzlies. Key plays included a pass interference penalty against Cave Springs and a 56-yard run by Knapp. He added the two-point conversion to hand Gans a 16-14 lead at the break.
The Grizzlies finished the game with 381 total yards. Woodruff connected on 7-of-9 passes for 78 yards. Eual Knapp had four receptions for 48 yards while Jake Knapp caught two for 13 yards and Branham had a 17-yard catch.
Defensively, Gans was paced by Jake Knapp with nine tackles while Kyle John was in on eight tackles and Eual Knapp made five stops plus a fumble recovery. Branham and Kyle Shoup both intercepted a pass for the Grizzlies, who are now 9-1 overall and 7-1 in the district.
