Sequoyah County's former district attorney, Richard Gray, pleaded not guilty during an arraignment hearing Friday to a charge of embezzlement.

Gray's attorney, Clark Brewster of Tulsa, reportedly entered the plea for Gray, 47, in Okmulgee County District Court, where both sides of the case agreed to hold the hearing.

Gray, who faces one felony count of embezzlement in Cherokee County, was initially indicted in October by a state grand jury. He is accused of taking about $8,800 in drug funds in September and October 2003 under the appearance of putting the money in a safe deposit box.

Gray was defeated by Jerry Moore in 2006 for the District 27 prosecutor position, which serves Sequoyah, Adair, Cherokee and Wagoner Counties.
