The Pastors' Fellowship of Sallisaw will hold a Thanksgiving celebration at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, 122 W. Chickasaw, in Sallisaw.

The Rev. Robert Polvado from the First Assembly of God Church in Sallisaw will be the speaker.

The Rev. Greg Burnsed of Immanuel Baptist Church will direct a community children's choir, which includes children in grades one through six. All children are invited to participate and do not have to have a church affiliation. The children are asked to attend a choir practice at First Baptist Church at 6 p.m. just before the service.

Several adult church choirs from Sallisaw will participate in the service including those from Eastside Baptist Church, Immanuel Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church and the First United Methodist Church.

A time for fellowship will follow the service in the church fellowship hall.

The Rev. Diana Hartman from the Presbyterian Church said boxes will be available at the service for collecting donations of unwrapped children's gifts that will be distributed on Dec. 21, along with Christmas food baskets, to needy families. The offering collected during the service is used by the Pastors' Fellowship for their community assistance projects, Hartman said.

"The fellowship assists the community by providing emergency assistance for medicine, transient transportation, utilities, food and care of the terminally ill through the offerings collected in our congregations and at our two community worship services for Thanksgiving and Good Friday," Hartman said. "We also lead the Sallisaw High School baccalaureate service. In addition, these congregations and agencies donate school supplies for the back-to-school give-away and food baskets and toys for needy families at Christmas."

Hartman said The Pastors' Fellowship of Sallisaw is an ecumenical group that is open to all area pastors, church leaders and other ministry leaders in the community. Currently active in the fellowship are Abundant Life, St. Francis Xavier Church, Catholic Charities, Church of the Nazarene, Dwight Mission Presbyterian Camp, Eastside Baptist Church, Elim Full Gospel Church, the Fellowship Chapel at Blue Ribbon Downs, the First Assembly of God, First Baptist Church, First Christian Church, First Presbyterian Church, First United Methodist Church, Immanuel Baptist Church, Journey Church, the Outreach Center, the Pentecostal Church of God and Trinity Lutheran Church.

"We meet at 8 a.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at the Ole South Restaurant in Sallisaw," Hartman said. "If your church or ministry is not currently participating, we encourage and invite you to join us."

For more information about the fellowship contact the fellowship president, Jason Helmbacher, at Immanuel Baptist Church at 775-4926; Vice President Diana Hartman of First Presbyterian Church at 775-4868; fellowship treasurers Mary Lynn Lufkin and Martha Billings of the Catholic Charities Helping Center at 775-6111, or any member of the fellowship.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
