Aaron Colby Riddle, 22, was alone in a cell when a detention center employee found him at about 10:45 p.m. Sept. 6, Cherokee County Undersheriff Jason Chennault said. Riddle was last seen alive at about 7:45 p.m.
Chennault said that it appeared Riddle used some sort of fabric to hang himself. Detention center employees tried administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation and called an ambulance. Ambulance personnel pronounced Riddle dead.
Riddle was booked into the jail Sept. 4 for alleged burglary. Chennault said when his deputies brought him into the jail, Riddle's uncle said Riddle had been under the care of a mental facility in Tahlequah.
"I believe they (the jail) put him on suicide watch," Chennault said.
Chennault said that Riddle left a note on the cell wall. He said Riddle gave no reason for his suicide in the note.
Chennault said his office is calling Riddle's death a suicide. He noted that the sheriff's office does not oversee the jail operations. He said the jail is governed by a trust authority.
The state jail inspector's office is currently investigating Riddle's death, Don Garrison with the office confirmed Thursday. Garrison expected to receive the jail inspector's report by Monday.
