Campers over the weekend near Moffett saw what they thought was a turtle shell sticking out of the mud along the riverbank, but when they pulled it out they discovered it was actually a human skull.

Sequoyah County Sheriff Johnny Philpot said the discovery was made south of Moffett by the Arkansas River.

"It's pretty old by looking at it," Philpot said.

The skull has been sent to the state medical examiner's office to make a determination on how hold it is. Philpot said the medical examiner's office uses an anthropologist to do the testing.

Moffett Police received the first call about the skull. Moffett officers then notified Philpot's office and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

Philpot said his office has found other human bones before that turned out to be Indian that were over 100 years old. He said the chances are that this skull is really old. He noted that there is an Indian cemetery in the area in which the skull was found. He said the skull was mostly intact and had most of its upper teeth.

He said his office will first get a date on the skull before deciding on whether to do an excavation.

He confirmed that a few other bones were found in the area, but those are believed to be animal bones.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
