Members of New Beginnings Church will hold a horseshoe tournament at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Greasy Community Building. Jackets will be awarded for first place and hooded sweatshirts will be given for second place. A concession stand will be open, and all proceeds will go to the church.
The second annual Gore Bluegrass Festival will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Ray Fine Park in Gore. Performers include Heartland Express, Daisy Street Station, Rebel Ridge and Common Tyme. Those planning to attend are reminded to bring lawn chairs and stay for dinner.
The Gans Booster Club will hold a 3-man Scramble Golf Tournament Saturday at the Quail Run Golf Course in Muldrow. The shotgun start will be at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $40 per person. First place will get $300, and pay out will go to first, fourth, eighth and 12th place. Mulligans may be purchased for $5 before the tournament. Cherokee Council members Janelle Lattimore Fullbright and David Thornton will host a community meeting at the Sequoyah County Fairgrounds in Sallisaw from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. A free hog fry will be held and all Cherokee citizens are invited to attend. The menu will also include beans, fried potatoes, Indian fry bread with honey, desserts and drinks. Serving will begin at 6 p.m. Principal Chief Chad Smith, Deputy Chief Joe Grayson, and Charlie Soap will be on hand to speak. Representatives from Cherokee Nation health, education, community assistance, human services, registration, career services and the housing authority will be available to answer question and provide informational materials. Parents of students in the ninth and 10th grades at Sallisaw High School are invited to attend a meeting to preview "Reality Check," a new abstinence-based program, which includes the Aids/HIV Prevention Education curriculum. Tenkiller State Park Partners will meet Thursday. The group is working on the annual Haunted Trail, which will be held at Tenkiller State Park. Leeann Bunn, park naturalist, said volunteers are needed for the Halloween event, especially families, church groups and Scout troops. The Brushy Elementary School Fall Festival will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3. The festival will include food, fun and games. Proceeds are used for Christmas gifts for the students.

Gore's Fall Clean-Up Day is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 11. Gore Public Works Authority (GPWA) water and trash customers will be allowed to dispose of undesirable items, with some exceptions such as no batteries, air compressors, hazardous materials, business or commercial wastes, and no tires. A detailed list of acceptable and unacceptable items will posted at the Gore Municipal Building and other locations in Gore. The list will also be available at the clean-up site during the event. The location for drop off will be in large containers to be temporarily placed at the intersection of NW Railroad Street and Main Street (intersection of State Highway100 and U.S. Highway 64). Participants must provide identification and proof of service (a current GPWA water or trash bill). Designated drop-off hours may be enforced.

The Girl Scout leaders of Sequoyah County will host a Teen Safety Seminar for girls ages 11 through17 for Make a Difference Day.
