The course is open to everyone, and those successfully completing the course will receive their Oklahoma Hunter Education Student Card, course organizers said. This Oklahoma course is accepted and honored in all 50 states.
Hunter Education cards are required by Oklahoma law for all people born after Dec. 31, 1971, upon reaching their 16th birthday or older, who want to purchase an Oklahoma hunting license, combination hunting and fishing license, lifetime license, or deer or turkey tag. Hunters under the age of 16 who want to purchase a deer gun or muzzleloader tag, or hunt big game, such as deer, must receive this certification.
Topics to be covered in the course will include rifle, shotgun, and handgun safety, handling, storage and cleaning, muzzleloading, bowhunting, Oklahoma laws and regulations, hunter responsibilities and survival and wilderness first aid.
The 2006 course has been reduced from 10 hours to eight hours. The instructors said they would still like to remind everyone that the course will last for eight hours. A test will be given at the end of the class. No students will be allowed to take the test early for any reason and should not ask to do so. If a child has any prior engagements, or sporting events that might interfere with the course, parents should take that into consideration before attending the course, the instructors said.
