Three people were killed and one other, a Sallisaw woman, was injured Sunday morning when the vehicle they were traveling in ran off a road in LeFlore County, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP).

Christopher Caldwell, 29, of Howe was pronounced dead at Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center in Poteau after the 12:04 a.m. accident, OHP reported. Daniel Lee Childress, 22, of Poteau was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kimberly A. Peters, 24, of Sallisaw was admitted to Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center with head injuries.

Mary Davis, 22, of Cameron was taken to St. Edward Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith, Ark., with multiple injuries, and died Tuesday.

Peters was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer south on a county road when she lost control of the vehicle on a downhill slope near Poteau, according to the OHP. The vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.

Poteau firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate Caldwell and Childress from the vehicle about 30 minutes after the accident.

An odor of alcohol was detected on Peters and drug use was indicated, the OHP reported. Peters and her three passengers were not wearing seat belts, according to the OHP. The OHP reported that unsafe speed was the cause of the collision.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
