A rural Vian Man was charged Oct. 1 in Sequoyah County District Court, Sallisaw, with cruelty to animals and shooting with intent to injure, both felonies.

Ronald Vee Brown, 59, is accused of shooting without provocation a dog on Sept. 25 with a .22-calibre rifle. The dog belonged to Eric Osburn, according to the report submitted by Sheriff's Deputy Monte Davis.

Brown is also accused of shooting with intent to injure Osburn on the same day.

In his report Davis writes that he was dispatched to a home east of Vian on Dwight Mission Road after Osburn called to say his neighbor shot at him and his dog. Osburn told the deputy that Brown had shot the dog and it was near death. Davis said he talked to Brown who told him he did shoot at the dog while it was running toward Osburn's house.

Davis said he discussed the situation with Undersheriff Roy Coleman, and then arrested Brown for reckless discharge of a firearm and for cruelty to animals, the charges for which he was booked into the county jail. He was released shortly after on a $3,000 bond.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
