Two Sequoyah County residents were recently sentenced to prison terms, Sequoyah County District Attorney Jerry S. Moore announced Tuesday.

Johnny Morris of Sallisaw was sentenced to 10 years in the Department of Corrections (DOC) for probation violations and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Morris was arrested on June 7 after Sallisaw Police Officer Wendal Hughes responded to a stabbing. Hughes discovered Morris had gotten into an argument with his ex-wife and stabbed her in the stomach with a knife. At the time, Morris was on probation for various drug charges.

"Violence of this nature can not be tolerated in our community," Kyle Waters, assistant district attorney handling the case, said.

In a separate case, it was found that another man, John F. Calhoun, violated the rules and conditions of his probation. Calhoun was sentenced to 10 years in the DOC, with five years suspended.

Calhoun violated his probation and was found to have used marijuana while on probation. Calhoun had been on probation for drug charges stemming from an investigation by the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office into a tip that Calhoun was manufacturing methamphetamine at his home north of Vian.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
