A Sallisaw man was charged Sept. 24 with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after he was accused of pursuing another vehicle and ramming the vehicle with his car.

If convicted, James R. Henderson of Sallisaw, 25, faces up to 10 years in prison or a year in the county jail.

The charge against Henderson stemmed from an alleged incident last month. On Aug. 23 Sallisaw police received several calls about two cars chasing each other and even ramming each other in and around the 1100 block of Ruth Street. The reporting person followed one of the cars and gave the location to the officers, according to police reports.

Sallisaw Police Sgt. Houston Murray reported stopping one of the cars involved in the alleged incident near Oak and Choctaw. When Murray walked up to the driver's side window, he reported seeing a young woman sitting in the back seat and what appeared to be a 2-year-old baby walking around in the back seat. The male driver told Murray that he was running from the woman's ex-boyfriend.

The woman in the back was in tears and scared, Murray reported. She told police that she had been visiting her ex-boyfriend, Henderson, and when she left with her new boyfriend, Henderson became mad and began chasing them in the area of Wal-Mart. The girl alleged that Henderson even hit their car.

As they neared Cedar Street, Henderson allegedly got in front of them, forcing them to stop. He then got out of his car and came up the driver's window, striking the woman's boyfriend in the face before getting back in his car and speeding away.

Later police discovered the car Henderson was driving, but did not locate Henderson.

At 4 a.m. on Aug. 24 Henderson came to the police department and agreed to speak with police. He told police that he was visiting with the woman and she left to change the baby and did not come back. He got up to see where she was going and saw her leaving with the other man. Henderson admitted to chasing their car, but denied ramming their vehicle.

He also admitted to pulling in front of their car, causing them to stop, but Henderson told police that the only reason he hit the man was because the man was bumping Henderson with his front bumper.

These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher.
