Football round-up: Sallisaw runs over Wardogs, 42-28

Bubba Philpot broke his own school record for most rushing yards in a game as Sallisaw avenged last year's playoff loss to Miami with a 42-28 win over the Wardogs in a non-district game at Perry F. Lattimore Stadium.

Philpot broke his old mark of 307 yards by carrying the football 34 times for 362 yards on Friday.

The Black Diamonds broke a 14-14 halftime deadlock with four second-half touchdowns while moving to 2-0 on the season.

Fullback Joseph Branham got Sallisaw going with a 19-yard touchdown run on the Diamonds' first drive of the second half. Philpot then added TD runs of 12, 10 and 25 yards as Sallisaw dropped Miami to 0-2.

Next up for Sallisaw is a Sept. 15 game at Muldrow.

Vian 55, Keys 0

VIAN - The Wolverines celebrated homecoming on Friday night with the most lopsided win of their brief three-year rivalry with Keys.

Vian, which defeated Keys in each of the past two seasons for the District A-7 championship, collected its second shutout of the season while rolling to the non-district victory at St. John Stadium.

Demarqua Pratt ran for 154 yards and three touchdowns while Miguel Pratt added 100 yards and one score. Seth Sloan ran for 78 yards and a TD and completed 7-of-12 passes for 131 yards with two TD passes to Londell Taylor. Vian rolled up 553 yards of total offense.

The Wolverines (2-0) will play at Westville on Sept. 15.

Roland 21, Westville 0 WESTVILLE - Ben Fowlkes ran for 160 yards and a touchdown as the Rangers improved to 2-0 on the season with a non-district victory at Akin-Langley Stadium.

Roland had a pair of first-half touchdowns called back and had to overcome 14 penalties on Friday. However, the Ranger defense picked off five Westville passes while shutting out the Yellowjackets.

Chase Quickel passed 24 yards to Brian Smith for the first Roland touchdown. Josh Angel added a three-yard TD run in the third period and Fowlkes capped the win with a two-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Gore 26, Central 6

GORE - The Pirates scored 26 unanswered points on Friday night to beat Central in the District A-8 opener for both teams.

Josh Small's 20-yard touchdown run put the visiting Tigers in front late in the first quarter, but Gore used a powerful ground game to wear down Central.

Jerard Finch ran for 124 yards and T.J. Baker ran for 119 as Gore evened its record at 1-1. Baker, Robby Summerlin and Finch all ran for touchdowns in the second half as the Pirates dropped Central 1-1.

Gans 48, Porter 28

PORTER - The Grizzlies trailed 16-14 entering the second quarter, but exploded for 20 points before halftime to take command in their District B-3 opener at Porter.

Nick Gard led Gans with 177 yards rushing, while Nick Woodruff ran for 147 and Kyle John 76 in the victory. Gans is now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Spiro 32, Muldrow 12

MULDROW - Spiro handed Muldrow its first loss of the season on Friday night in a non-district game at Aubrey J. Henshaw Bulldog Stadium.

Muldrow (1-1) will try to bounce back on Friday when the Bulldogs host Sallisaw at 7:30 p.m.

Cave Springs 54, Rejoice Christian 6

BUNCH - The Hornets claimed their first win of the season after jumping out to a 42-0 lead in the first half against Rejoice Christian.

Sam Morgan caught three touchdown passes in the first quarter and tied the school record for the most in one game as Cave Springs evened its record at 1-1.

The Hornets will host Oaks on Thursday night.
