As Sallisaw continues to grow, Sequoyah Memorial Hospital strives to stay on top of current healthcare trends and the needs of its patients. But it also strives to continue providing a quality workplace for its valued employees.

The atmosphere at the hospital has always been one of family, and is now becoming one of fun, consistent positive attitudes, and focused attention on patients and co-workers.

The FISH! Philosophy has arrived!

Based on the Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle, Wash., the FISH! Philosophy was formulated and produced by Charthouse Learning and is used by thousands of companies across the United States. The philosophy combines having fun with co-workers and customers, striving to make someone's day, focusing our full attention on the people we serve, and choosing to remain positive in the face of unfortunate circumstances to provide an atmosphere of fun and productivity.

The hospital chose to implement the philosophy to guarantee each patient has a quality experience, ensure employees enjoy being in their workplace environment, and to continue to set the precedent for quality healthcare and customer service.

Employees attended a two-hour training session during which they learned about the FISH! Philosophy.

Having been employed by two FISH! companies prior to coming to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital, I believe in the principles of the philosophy and the positive effects it can have on a business.

However, one of the most important factors for future patients to remember is that each hospital employee has the right to choose whether or not to embrace the FISH! principles; it is not a philosophy that can or will be forced on anyone. Consequently, employees living the FISH! principles while at work or in their daily lives are doing so in an effort to improve their workplace and to ensure patients have a positive experience during their hospital stay. After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
