A hunter education course has been set for Sept. 30 in Roland. The course will be held at the junior high cafeteria on the Roland campus and will last from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It is open to everyone and those successfully completing the course will receive their Oklahoma Hunter Education Student Card. This Oklahoma course is accepted and honored in all 50 states.

These cards are required by Oklahoma law for all persons born after Dec. 31, 1971, upon reaching their 16th birthday or older who want to purchase an Oklahoma hunting license, combination hunting/fishing license, lifetime license, or deer/turkey tag. Also, hunters under 16 years of age who want to purchase a deer gun or muzzleloader tag, or hunt big game such as deer must receive this certification.

Topics covered in the course include rifle, shotgun, and handgun safety/handling/storage/cleaning, muzzleloading, bowhunting, Oklahoma laws and regulations, hunter responsibilities and survival/wilderness first aid.

The hunter education course for 2006 has been reduced from 10 hours to eight hours. The instructors would still like to remind everyone that the course will last for eight hours. A test will be given at the end of the class and no students will be permitted to take the test early for any reason. Please do not ask. If your child has any prior engagements, or sporting events that might interfere with the course, please take that into consideration before attending the course. The instructors do appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
