A beginning art class for serious art students ages 10 through 16 will be held from 9 a.m. until noon Thursday at the Muldrow Cherokee Community Organization Activity Center in Muldrow. The latest "Veggie Tales" video, "The Wonderful Wizard of Ha's," will be shown Saturday at the First Christian Church at 706 N. Wheeler in Sallisaw. The video is an adaptation of the Biblical story of the prodigal son, and the showing will be part of a carnival planned from 3 to 5 p.m. The carnival will also include games, food, and other family activities. A memorial dedication ceremony to honor Capt. Frederick F. Henry, a Medal of Honor winner, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Vian City Park. Henry was born in Vian on Sept. 23, 1917, to James Parks Henry and Ida Mae (Foster) Henry. He was lost Sept.1, 1950, during the Korean War when he stayed behind to fight the enemy so his platoon could escape. He was listed as missing in action until he was declared dead on Dec. 31, 1953. His wife, Bonnie, accepted the Medal of Honor for her husband on Jan. 9, 1951.
A garage sale to raise money for a Christmas party for the children living at Boardwalk Apartments in Fort Smith will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Lincoln Youth Center, 1422 N. Tenkiller Park Partner's Haunted Halloween Trail will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the park. Admission is $3.50 for adults and $1.50 for children are 12 and under. The Webbers Falls Elementary School will host the first annual elementary school basketball tournament Oct. 22, 25 and 27. Teams from Vian, Warner, Gore, Arkoma, Braggs and Webbers Falls will participate in the tournament. The tournament will begin at 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, and Thursday, Oct. 25, and at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27.

A Hog Fry Fundraiser Celebration will be sponsored by the Muldrow Cherokee Community Organization from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Muldrow Park. Tickets are $5 in advance or $6 at the event. All children's tickets will be $4. The meal, cooked in the park, will include hog meat, barbeque beans, fry bread, grape dumplings and a soft drink. Native American music will be played, a horseshoe pitch will be held, and Cherokee cultural demonstrations will be held. Door prizes will also be given away.

The annual Veterans Day Salute will be held by the Gore High School Student Council at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, at the Brooks Cawhorn Gymnasium. State Rep. Ed Cannaday will be the guest speaker. Dinner will be served at the high school cafeteria.

The Gore High School Future Career Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is celebrating the Oklahoma Centennial by selling engraved bricks for $25 each. The bricks will be used to build the Gore Schools Centennial Brick Plaza on the high school campus near the flagpole and marquee. All proceeds will go to the project. FCCLA members are managing the project but are not making money from it. The deadline to submit an order is Nov. 15, and orders should be brought to the high school office.
The Vian Baptist Church Youth Group is initiating a supply drive for military troops serving overseas. The church youths have begun writing letters to soldiers and plan to continue to do so with the holidays approaching. A donation box is inside the church to collect supplies, such as ChapStick, Visine, socks, hand warmers and any other items the community wishes to contribute. These will be sent out the first part of December to arrive before Christmas. The church is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily to accept gifts.
