First United Methodist Church in Sallisaw is hosting a community blood drive from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at the church, located at 2100 McGee Dr.

"Accident victims, cancer and leukemia patients, and people needing livesaving surgeries and transfusions, require an adequate blood supply every day," Delisa English, chief executive officer of American Red Cross Blood Services Southwest Region-Oklahoma, said. "Blood donations for these everyday needs are especially critical during the holidays, because donors are distracted by holiday activities and fewer people give blood."

People who have never given blood and repeat donors are encouraged to donate this November. Donating blood is easy. It takes only about an hour, and it could mean the world to someone who needs blood, English said.

"On behalf of everyone who donates blood this November, I would like to thank you for giving the gift of life. Families are able to share another holiday with their loved ones thanks to your donations," English said.

Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health, and not have given blood within 56 days. They must also have a Red Cross donor card or photo identification when they donate. Donors should eat a good meal and drink extra water before giving blood.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 1-800 GIVE LIFE (1-800-448-3543) or visit www.GIVELIFE.org.

"With your blood donation you'll be giving someone something to be thankful for this November," English said.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
