Journey Church in Sallisaw is participating in Angel Food Ministries, a program that provides foods at a low cost and raises money for the churches involved.

The Sallisaw church is participating in the program with Larry Hutton Ministries of Broken Arrow. Angel Food Ministries originated in 1994 with 34 families in Monroe, Ga., and has grown to serve thousands of families every month across 32 states, according to the Angel Food Ministries Web site.

Sheryl Ysbrand, Journey Church member, said the program provides a box of various groceries for $25 per month. The church accepts payment for the groceries by cash, money orders or food stamp cards (not personal checks). If using food stamps, the person whose name appears on the card must appear in person to place their order. There are no applications and no qualifications in order to purchase the food and there are no limits on quantities purchased.

The amount of food is estimated to feed a family of four for a week, or a single person living alone for a month.

Ysbrand said, "This is not day-old or outdated food. It's all fresh, name-brand products, shipped to Tulsa on refrigerated trucks for same-day distribution."

For each box of food sold, $1 is returned to the church for use in the church's benevolent fund, Ysbrand said.

Ysbrand said orders for the November food delivery are now being taken at the church on the following schedule:

-5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday (Oct. 30) and Thursday (Nov. 1)

-10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 2)

-9 a.m. to noon on Saturday (Nov. 3)

Payment is required at the time the order is placed.

The food will be distributed between 10 a.m. and noon on Nov. 17. A receipt is given for each order with the pickup time. Any food left unclaimed after 12:01 p.m. will be donated to others in need.

On the day of pickup, participants must bring a box to put their food in.

Ysbrand said November's grocery list includes:

-One four-pound package of individually quick frozen chicken leg quarters

-One 6.5-ounce stroganoff dinner

-One 26-ounce Banquet Turkey Entr
