A Vian man was recently charged with allegedly sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman.

Lloyd Craighead, 42, was charged Oct. 24 with sexual battery stemming from an incident in September, court records indicate.

According to court records, Sequoyah County Sheriff's Deputy Cindy Smith received a report on Oct. 2 from an 18-year-old woman in reference to allegations of sexual abuse. The woman described to Smith an alleged incident in August when Craighead picked her up from work, which he sometimes did. When Craighead picked her up and started home, he took a back road in the area southeast of Vian. While in the car, he had her sit next to him and he first placed his hand on her leg and began rubbing. The woman told Smith that she and Craighead then had intercourse.

The woman also described another incident in September while she and Craighead were fishing. The woman told Smith that she and Craighead went to look for wood and he again had sex with her when she did not choose to do so.

On Sept. 28, Smith spoke to Craighead who denied having sex with the woman. He did admit to touching the alleged victim in a sexual manner, but he said both of them were wearing clothing at the time.

A warrant has since been sought for Craighead's arrest. As of Monday morning, he had not been booked into the Sequoyah County Jail in Sallisaw, jail officials said.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
