The Gans Grizzlies will try to maintain their mastery of Cave Springs on Thursday night, when they travel to Bunch for a District B-3 football game.

Kickoff at Hornet Field is set for 7:30 p.m.

Gans picked up its first football win in school history back in 1998 with a 20-8 victory at Cave Springs. Since then, the Grizzlies have dominated the series with the Hornets. They've won seven of the eight meetings, including the past five in a row.

In order to make it six in a row, the Grizzlies will have to shut down the Cave Springs aerial attack led by quarterback Michael Bunch and receiver Bryan Girdner.

Bunch has already thrown for 1,096 yards this season. He's completed 74-of-177 passes for 14 touchdowns and Girdner has been the main receiver. Girdner leads the Hornets with 30 receptions for 487 yards and six touchdowns.

In last week's loss at Porter, Cave Springs went to the air 40 times and Bunch connected with Littlewolf Pettit for three touchdown passes.

"That's what we're expecting them to do," said Gans head coach Trent Holt. "They've had some success throwing the ball."

The Hornets are 1-5 overall and 0-4 in the district. Their lone victory was in week two, when they topped Rejoice Christian 54-6.

While Cave Springs has lost four in a row since then, Gans has bounced back from a loss to No. 1-ranked Morrison by whipping a pair of previously undefeated teams in Kiefer and Welch.

The Grizzlies will take a record of 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the district into Thursday's game.

Gans is the fifth highest scoring team in Class B, averaging 42 points per game. The offensive leaders this season have been quarterback Nick Woodruff, running backs Kyle John and Nick Gard and receiver Kameron Pastore.

Woodruff has rushed for 473 yards and 13 touchdowns in addition to passing for 447 yards and six TDs. John is the leading rusher with 625 yards and seven scores, while Gard has picked up another 525 yards with six TDs. Pastore has caught 12 passes for 161 yards and four touchdowns.

Holt said the Grizzlies are a little banged up after last Friday's win over Welch. Woodruff had his hand mashed between two helmets and Gard received stitches after cutting his elbow, but both are expected to start the game against Cave Springs.
