A Webbers Falls man is accused in the Saturday sexual assault of a 14-year-old neighbor.

Muskogee County Sheriff's Investigator Tim Brown said that Walter Gilbert, 50, has been arraigned and is facing charges of rape by instrumentation and child molestation.

Brown said that the incident took place at Gardenwalk Apartments in Webbers Falls. He said the sheriff's office was called to assist the Webbers Falls Police Department.

Brown said apparently the victim and Gilbert live in adjoining apartments. The girl was home alone and was folding clothes and had left the door open to her apartment because it was warm outside. Gilbert allegedly walked through the open door to get inside the apartment where the girl lives and allegedly pushed her down and began assaulting her. The girl's aunts reportedly walked into the apartment while the assault was taking place and confronted Gilbert.

The girl's aunts immediately called police to report the assault.

Brown said Gilbert gave conflicting stories about the incident and was arrested.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
