Marie Caleda McCormick, 20, was charged Tuesday with grand larceny. If convicted, she faces up to a $5,000 fine and up to one year in prison, according to the charge.
At about 5:20 p.m. Oct. 20 the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office called the Gans Police Department, advising that a resident in the 700 block of West Brown in Gans needed to file a report on cash stolen from her purse.
Gans Officers Luke Morrison and Billy Blevins arrived on the scene about 10 minutes later, and the alleged victim reported that a relative, McCormick, took money out of two envelopes in her purse. One envelope contained $1,100 and the other had $1,400, the woman reported. The alleged victim confronted McCormick about the money and McCormick gave back $500 of the missing $2,500.
When questioned by police, McCormick, who at that time lived at the same home as the victim, allegedly told police that she only took $1,100 of the money so she could buy a cell phone. She said she would pay back the money owed to the victim.
