A benefit account has been set up to help a county family whose home was destroyed by fire Nov. 24.

Clifford and Vera Looper and their two sons were in the home located in Hanson southeast of Sallisaw at the time of the fire, but escaped unharmed.

The family is currently staying nearby with their daughter, Vera Martin, in a small mobile home.

Martin said a benefit account has been set up for her parents, who did not have insurance on their home, at National Bank of Sallisaw under the names Vera Martin and Vera Looper.

Frank Cullum, Central firefighter, said the Central Fire Department received the fire call at 6 or 6:30 p.m. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the home and the adjoining shop were engulfed in flames.

Cullum said Central Fire Department called Maple and Muldrow Fire Departments to assist.

Firefighters believe the fire, which was believed to be electrical, began on the northeast side of the home.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
