WILBURTON - The Roland Lady Rangers shut down Wilburton in the second half and went on to grab a 61-30 victory on Saturday night in the championship game of the Eastern Oklahoma State College Invitational at C.C. Dunlap Fieldhouse.

Roland broke open a tight game with a 13-2 run in the third quarter and the Lady Rangers outscored Wilburton 18-6 in the fourth period to seal the win.

Head coach Bobby Walters said the Lady Rangers were a second-half team in both of their games at the tournament. They defeated Clayton 63-26 in their first outing.

"We had slow starts in both games, but we had excellent second halves both times," said Walters. "I don't know if our pressure slowly took its toll or what, but I was really pleased with the way we finished both of the games."

In the championship game, Ericka Edwards was one of three Roland players in double figures while pouring in a game-high 21 points. Jasmine Kirkwood added 15 and Jamie Morgan 10 for Roland. Chelsey Roberts scored eight, Katie Matlock five, Keondra Manager one and Brittany Hudson one.

Wilburton was led by eight points each from April Raye and Liza Cecil.

Roland advanced to the finals with a blowout win over Clayton on Friday. Edwards was the top scorer in that game, as well, with a 16 points. Roberts chipped in 12 and Matlock 11.

CLAYTON 61, ROLAND 58 (B)

Randy Brown's three-point basket at the buzzer lifted Class A 14th-ranked Clayton past the Rangers in the boys' championship game of the EOSC Invitational on Saturday night.

The shot capped a wild finish after Zach Roberts had pulled the Rangers even with a long-range jumper with about four seconds left in the game.

"I thought we played pretty well, but in the last minute and a half we didn't finish like we needed to and made some mistakes that cost us," said Roland head coach Eddie Lewis. "I was disappointed with that, but we put ourselves in position to win the game at the end and if we can keep on doing that, we'll be OK."

Roberts led Roland with 17 points and was joined in double figures by teammates Cory Silva with 14, Will Roam with 12 and Levi Biggerstaff with 11. Karl Dixon and Avory Taylor added two points each for Roland, which saw a five-game winning streak snapped and fell to 5-2.

Clayton, which knocked off defending Class 3A state semifinalist Verdigris the day before, improved to 11-2. Gary Cagle led the way with 19 points, Brown had 14 and Marcus Sullivan 11.

Roland had a first-round bye at the tournament and dominated Wilburton 66-32 in the semifinals to advance to the title game. Roberts led the Rangers with 14 points and Roam had nine against Wilburton.

ROLAND JV 30, VICTORY LIFE 29 (G)

The Lady Rangers' junior varsity squad gained some valuable experience and came away with the consolation championship trophy after topping Victory Life on Saturday.

Carlie Robertson and Jaslin Kellogg led the Roland JV with seven points each and Chelsea Thompson added six in the victory.

"Anytime you can get some experience, it's good for them," said Walters. "Being in that kind of environment with a lot of fans and a lot excitement will help them."
