In other business, the board also called for the annual election. Superintendent Lawrence Barnes said the board approved the annual election resolution to be submitted to the Sequoyah County Election Board. James Simmons, current board president who holds seat one, is up for re-election, Barnes said. School board terms are five years.
The board approved a new middle school student council activity account, a $100 extra duty stipend to all staff members, and the Indian Policies and Procedures for the school. Barnes explained that the policies are required for the school to receive aid and other federal program funds.
Barnes said the board approved proposed dates for the board's regular meetings for the 2007 calendar year. The meetings will remain on the second Monday of each month.
The board approved activity fundraiser requests, declared old library books and materials as surplus, and approved the construction of a concession and restroom building that will serve the visitors' side for football and baseball. Barnes said construction is expected to start in several weeks. The estimated cost of the project is $35,000.
A Learn and Serve Club program at the high school campus was also approved. Barnes said the Cherokee Nation requested that the school have the program to qualify for various grants offered by the tribe. The program is community service that students can participate in. Barnes said many college scholarships available to students require community service.
The board employed Stephanie Swafford as a full-time cook before taking part in an Oklahoma State School Board Association workshop.
