Cecil J. Sixkiller Jr, 26, of Sallisaw was charged in Sequoyah County District Court, Sallisaw, on April 21 with assault and battery on a police officer, attempting to escape from arrest and public intoxication.

According to the report, at 9:42 p.m. April 14 officers with the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Department and Sallisaw Police Department went to the Royal West Apartments on Ruth Street to serve a felony arrest warrant on Sixkiller.

Sixkiller opened the door and according to the report officers could smell a strong odor of alcohol. Officers told Sixkiller why they were there, and Sixkiller wanted to know if he could put on some pants from his bedroom. Officers would not allow him to, and Sixkiller said he was giving himself up. He turned around and placed his left hand behind his back.

When officers tried to place handcuffs on Sixkiller he allegedly pulled away and ran into Sequoyah County Deputy Jeff Hodge with his shoulder and arm and darted out of the apartment.

Sixkiller took off running toward Ramm’s Trailer Park, and officers pursued. As Sixkiller tried to jump a fence, Sallisaw Police Officer Mark Rutherford yelled for Sixkiller to stop or he would use his taser. Sixkiller didn’t stop so Rutherford deployed his taser as Sixkiller was trying to climb a fence. Both probes of the Taser missed Sixkiller because he fell over the fence. Sixkiller got up and ran into Ramm’s Trailer Park and the officer lost sight of him. After a few moments of searching, officers located Sixkiller lying under tree branches.

Officers ordered Sixkiller at gunpoint to come out and lay face down on the ground but Sixkiller got up and began moving toward officers then turned and ran toward a barbed wire fence.

Officer Craig Sharp deployed his Taser as Sixkiller was climbing over the fence. One probe made contact with Sixkiller as Sixkiller fell over the fence, but Sixkiller got up and tried to take off running again. Officer Rutherford deployed his taser and struck Sixkiller in the upper right chest area and his upper right thigh and Sixkiller fell to the ground.

Sixkiller was taken to the Sallisaw Police Department and later transferred to Sequoyah County Jail were he is currently being held without bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 16 in Sequoyah County District Court, Sallisaw.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
