Thanks to donors, the Helping Center in Sallisaw is now swimming in suds, the center’s co-directors, Martha Billings, left, and MaryLynn Lufkin said. They explained that the Helping Center gives each person who comes to the center a hygiene bag, which includes enough laundry soap to do two loads of laundry. The center was nearly out of laundry soap when the call went out for suds help. Lufkin said the soap donations will help fill the hygiene bags for several months. But the need continues, and the center is out of toddler diapers, sizes four through six. The center is open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and can take donations then. The need of the week — large diapers — may also be dropped off at Your TIMES between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A food drive will be conducted by the Ki Bois Area Transit System (KATS) in Sallisaw on Wednesday and Thursday.

KATS drivers will accept one non-perishable food product for a ride on the bus rather than the usual $1 fee for a bus ride.

KATS officials said they are hoping to collect a lot of canned goods and non-perishable food items for Catholic Charities. The foods will be used to fill up the Christmas baskets that Catholic Charities gives to those in need.

Anyone who needs a ride but doesn’t have a food item will pay the regular fee.

The canned-goods collection will only be held on Wednesday and Thursday, KATS personnel said.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
