Richard Jordan, a 1993 Vian graduate, who played with the Detroit Lions 1997-2002, is returning to his hometown to host the annual camp.
Jordan and other pros will host a two-day football camp for Vian, Gore, Keys and Stilwell high school football players. Friday’s camp will be 6-9 p.m. and Saturday’s camp will be 10 a.m. to noon. Free hotdogs and drinks will be served to camp participants following the camp.
After leaving Vian in 1993, Jordan played college ball at Missouri Southern in Joplin. He was a first-team NCAA Division II All-American as a senior in 1996 and was MVP of the MIAA conference. He garnered second-team All-America honors in 1995 and was co-MVP in the MIAA. Jordan received honorable mention All-America status as a sophomore in 1994.
He ranks second in career tackles (416) and sacks (20) in the Missouri Southern record book. The Detroit Lions drafted him in the seventh round in 1997.
A 6-1, 252-pound linebacker who wore No. 99 for the Lions, he started three games in 1998, intercepting one pass.
He brings with him other former NFL players from the late 1990s.
Some of the former pros attending will include Reggie Brown, a Texas A&M product who started 26 games for the Detroit Lions in 1996 and 1997; Allen Aldridge, a University of Houston product who was in the NFL 1994-2001 with the Denver Broncos and the Lions, having more than 60 tackles for Denver in both 1995 and 1996; and Hayward Clay, a Texas A&M product who was with the St. Louis Rams in 1996 and the Dallas Cowboys in 1998, starting four games as a tight end for St. Louis in 1996.
Younger players will also have the opportunity to suit up for a short drill with the pros prior to an awards assembly, and autographs and pictures with the pros, at 1 p.m. in the gymnasium.
Volunteers are needed to work at the event Friday and Saturday. Anyone interested in helping out, contact Amie Remer, event organizer, at 918-773-8000.
Donations are currently being taken for two-liter pop donations and bottled water for Saturday’s cookout. Beverage donations can be dropped off at the Vian-Tenkiller News office at 205 Thornton Street in Vian.
